BRONX BREAKDOWN

1️⃣ This morning’s perusal of New York Yankees coverage around the internet was much the same as it has been for a while. Most of the names and numbers change, but the storylines remain constant: the offense is mired in a deep funk and the starting pitching is elite. Oh, and George Lombard Jr. may be the Yankees’ savior.

But The Right Field Porch came across the following excerpt from Ethan Sears in the New York Post’s Beyond The Back Page newsletter:

“The ability to go down to a four-man rotation in the playoffs and move starters to a bullpen that’s been underwhelming plays in the Yankees’ favor as well.”

Sears was analyzing the Yankees’ pitching depth as the regular season winds down, especially now with Carlos Rodón’s return coupled with Max Fried’s second stint on the injured list.

Ideally, a four-man rotation of Gerrit Cole, Cam Schlittler, Fried and Rodón is as stout a gauntlet as a manager can produce. With that postseason alignment, the thought is that Will Warren and Ryan Weathers would transition to the bullpen. And while that move would give the Yankees added depth, The Right Field Porch has been fixated on Sears calling it “a bullpen that’s been underwhelming.”

Is that a typo? We did some research.

▪️Heavy Workload: New York’s bullpen is heavily taxed, ranking 10th in the majors in relief outings (420) and save situations (127). The Yankees rank fourth in high-leverage entries (148) and first in games entered with runners on base (152). Also, they rank third in pitch appearances on zero days’ rest (84).
▪️The Flaws: Sears may be fixating on the bullpen’s 22 blown saves (tied for fifth-most) and 63% save percentage (19th). Those numbers are far from ideal, so Sears has a point — to a degree.

However, New York’s bullpen has also been largely dominant.

▪️ERA Leaderboard: The bullpen boasts a 3.04 ERA — second-best in the majors (0.11 behind Boston, 0.71 ahead of Detroit). Over the last 65 games, the relievers have an MLB-best 2.50 ERA.
▪️Base Quality: The bullpen’s 1.20 WHIP and .221 opponent batting average rank third-best in MLB.
▪️Stranding Runners: Yankees relievers have inherited a major league-high 219 runners and hold an MLB-best 21% inherited runners scored rate — either Tim Hill (6.7%), Brent Headrick (10.3%) and Fernando Cruz (13.6%) ranking first, fourth and sixth, respectively, individually.

Right now, New York’s postseason prospects hinge more on the offense than the pitching. If the Yankees could score more runs in clusters, then some of the negative numbers above would be reduced.

Moving long-relief candidates like Warren or Weathers into multi-inning bullpen roles in October won't just add depth; it will insulate high-leverage arms (David Bednar, Cruz, Headrick) from overuse, keeping them fresh for true high-stakes spots.

So the bullpen might not be as underwhelming as it is overworked.

2️⃣ Cody Bellinger is scheduled for an MLB rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

He has hit safely in nine of his first 12 career games, slashing .293/.370/.463 (12-for-41) with eight runs, a double, two home runs, and three RBIs. … According to FanGraphs, his eight defensive runs saved are tied for third-most among MLB shortstops this season.

➡️ New York’s pitching staff has allowed 467 runs this season—their second-fewest through 125 games in the last 46 162-game seasons, trailing only the 437 allowed in 2022 (excludes the 2020 60-game season and strike-shortened 1981 season).

➡️ Will Warren makes his 13th road start of the season tonight. He’s 4-3 with a 4.45 ERA and 46 strikeouts on the road, having allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight of those 12 outings. The Yankees are 9-3 in his road starts, with those nine wins tied for fifth-most in MLB.

BRONX BREAKDOWN

1️⃣ This will be short and simple.

New York is hitting an American League-worst .230. There are certainly some metrics that would argue that the Yankees are not the worst, but batting average is as simple as it gets, and the Yankees are 15th out of 15 teams. They’ve been passed in run differential by the Red Sox.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. needs to be benched. If the Yankees want to keep a lefty bat in the lineup, how about moving Luis García Jr. to second base and letting Paul Goldschmidt and Ben Rice platoon between first base and designated hitter?

At this point, determining a lineup based on matchups isn’t faring well.

Ali Sánchez is the team’s leading hitter (.271), albeit with just 59 at-bats. George Lombard Jr. is next at .265 (34 at-bats). Skip over Cody Bellinger (.259) and Giancarlo Stanton (.256) for injured list reasons, and Ben Rice is next at .251 — and dropping fast.

It’s hard to pin the hitting woes of the past week on Trent Grisham and Austin Wells, as they have been the two most productive hitters.

Chisholm, for all his flash and flair, is fizzling. Strikeout after strikeout — a team-leading 140, by the way — his body language screams “checked out.” Yes, it’s frustrating for him. Yes, he’s a wear-his-emotions-on-his-sleeve kinda guy. But he could also provide a spark — and he’s not.

When a team relies on home runs for its run production, it’s hard to sit the team’s second-leading home run hitter — yes, Grisham has as many as Aaron Judge (17) — but it’s time.

At this point, there’s no guarantee that getting Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton back is going to cure the offensive woes. There’s also no guarantee that someone else won’t hit the injured list. It’s baseball. Or as they like to say now in the Bronx, “Schlitt happens.”

The Yankees will make the playoffs. That’s almost certain now because of the pitching. But with each passing week of games in which New York scratches out one, two or three runs like it’s already the postseason, it’s becoming evident this is just the Yankees’ offensive identity.

1️⃣ The cavalry is coming.

Left-hander Carlos Rodón pitched 4.1 scoreless innings Thursday for Double-A Somerset in his second minor league rehab start as he eyes a return to the New York rotation. Five days after a 2.2-inning start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Rodón looked in good form. He threw 58 pitches (41 strikes, 70.7% strike rate), allowed two hits and one walk, and struck out seven.

Where Rodón, who has been on the injured list since June 30, goes next is the question waiting to be answered. After this weekend’s series in Toronto and an off day Monday, Will Warren is the probable starter for the Yankees’ series opener Tuesday in Baltimore. There has been talk of piggybacking Rodón with another pitcher (most likely Ryan Weathers or Warren). Barring a shift in the current rotation, the earliest he would likely pitch is next weekend because Weathers starts Sunday in Toronto and Warren’s scheduled start Tuesday in Baltimore would give Rodón just four days’ rest.

Rodón’s eventual return likely means either Weathers or Warren will transition to the bullpen. At that point, the Yankees will have about five weeks before the postseason to figure out the most effective way to utilize the evolving staff — and that does not even factor in Clarke Schmidt’s potential return.

A Yankees staff that is already one of MLB’s best is about to get even stronger.

1️⃣ As expected after New York demoted Anthony Volpe to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and called up prospect George Lombard Jr. to play shortstop, Volpe’s transition to second base is underway.

Volpe has not played second base since 2021 with High-A Hudson Valley. He played two games (18 innings) that season, totaling eight chances with two putouts, four assists and two errors. Critics will point to those two errors and say, “See, he can’t even play second base.”

Still, Volpe’s pinstripe days are likely not over.

Barring the unforeseen, Lombard has dazzled enough in a small sample size to project as the 2027 Opening Day starting shortstop. Don’t expect Jazz Chisholm Jr., who struggled during his free-agency season, to be his middle infield partner. Re-signing him this offseason seems unlikely given in-house options like Volpe, José Caballero and newly acquired Luis García Jr., who has played 508 career games at second base. The Yankees could also pursue someone like Luis Arráez, making second base a low priority.

Heading into the offseason, New York’s shopping list resembles its trade deadline priorities: a right-handed-hitting catcher, bullpen depth and perhaps a third baseman with more offensive production than Ryan McMahon.

In two starts at second for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Volpe has played error-free defense with three putouts, three assists and a double play. He will remain at the position and could be recalled when MLB rosters expand for the stretch run, allowing the Yankees to test a Lombard-Volpe middle infield.

So before fans celebrate Volpe’s departure too much, keep in mind his days in pinstripes may not be over.

What can beat them? The Yankees themselves. Here is a breakdown of what the starters have received for run support.

Ideally six runs of support would be nice. And come October if that’s the case, then the Yankees will be golden. But three to five runs scored will likely be the norm. BRONX BREAKDOWN

1️⃣ Amid an American League pennant chase on an early August Saturday against one of the National League’s best teams, part of the New York Yankees’ future was on full display.

It may have been easy to miss, lost in the questions of when a large part of the franchise’s present — Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Cody Bellinger and Carlos Rodón — will return from the injured list.

The Yankees’ 5-4 win over Atlanta was powered not only by Gerrit Cole’s standout seven-inning start, but by three players who are a combined 73 years old — Ben Rice (27), Spencer Jones (25) and George Lombard Jr. (21). They were a combined 5-for-10 with four runs, four RBIs, a triple and two home runs, and were instrumental in the late innings when they were needed the most.

Cam Schlittler, just 25, takes the mound today with Rice, Jones and Lombard in the lineup.

Rice and Schlittler have taken huge development steps this season, so big that each made the AL All-Star team. Through four games — yes, pump the brakes — Lombard looks big-league ready both in the field and at the plate. And Jones is looking more comfortable with each passing game.

No, the baton is not being turned over — yet — but if these youngsters keep improving like they have been, then things in the Bronx should be fine.

In 24 starts this season, he has allowed one earned run or fewer in 16 of his starts, including 14 of his last 20.

➡️ New York scored five runs Saturday, just the fifth time since the All-Star break it has done so. … The Yankees also hit two homers and snapped a two-game homerless streak. They have not gone more than two games this season without hitting a home run. … New York stole three bases Saturday snapping a five-game stretch without a swipe. BRONX BREAKDOWN

1️⃣ Carlos Rodón threw with the Yankees Friday, and afterward manager Aaron Boone told the New York Daily News that Rodón is going to make a rehab start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Saturday with the expectation of throwing 50 pitches, maybe three innings. Rodón will likely be activated before he’s fully built back up.

2️⃣ New York signed Mitch Garver to a minor league contract Friday. Garver, 35, was released by Seattle earlier this week after slashing .175/.302/.294 in 149 plate appearances this season.

“Really just trying to add to our depth and protection and kind of get him into our system and see where we can help him, see what he has,” said Aaron Boone of the right-handed hitter. “You never know.”

Garver has slashed .229/.325/.432 with 110 homers and 324 RBIs in 10 major league seasons. His production has been sporadic. In 2019, with Minnesota, he hit .273 with 31 homers and 67 RBIs and he had another productive season in 2023 with Texas, hitting .270 with 19 homers and 50 RBIs. His career strikeout rate sits at 27.2%, including a 32.9% rate in 2026.

➡️ George Lombard Jr. will make his third start at shortstop tonight. He went 2-for-6 with a homer in two starts against St. Louis. While it is still a very small sample size, Lombard has converted 12 fielding chances with nine assists and three double plays.

➡️ Atlanta’s starters have yet to allow a home run in August, pitching 27.0 homerless innings over five starts. The Braves are the only team in the National League to do so this month. … Atlanta has hit 50 total home runs off left-handed pitching this season, the most of any National League team. Matt Olson’s 12 home runs off opposing left-handers are tied with Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber for the most in baseball, while Drake Baldwin and Michael Harris II are tied for eighth with seven each. Those three batters have combined to hit .266/.325/.474 against left-handers this season.

BRONX BREAKDOWN

On June 19, New York was at its high-water mark, 18 games over .500 with a 46-28 record and a three-game lead over Tampa Bay. The Yankees have gone 18-22 since, slipping to 3.5 games behind the Rays and seeing their 15.5-game lead over Boston whittled down to two.

The trade deadline has passed, and while there are many who don’t believe New York did enough to address certain needs like catching and the bullpen, the Yankees achieved understated success.

Luis García Jr. was a steal. Sure, he’s another left-handed bat at a first-base position where the Yankees are well stocked, but García was one of the top hitters available and too good to pass up when the main options were drying up. Despite the continued calls for manager Aaron Boone to be fired, he has arguably done his finest work this season. He will make this work.

Think of the rest of the season like this: Which of the other 29 MLB teams will greatly improve its roster over the next seven weeks? The answer is none. With the trade deadline gone, teams will now dance until their final song with the rosters they currently have — give or take a player or two coming off the injured list.

None will be able to overhaul its dance card with All-Stars like the Yankees can when Carlos Rodón, Cody Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton — and perhaps Aaron Judge and Clarke Schmidt — return.

Yes, the Yankees have been treading water over the past 40 games. Yes, they have been in their share of nail-biters, but they’re still very much in the thick of winning the American League East and securing home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Since July 1, New York has scored two or fewer runs in 13 games and is 6-7 in those contests. Those kinds of nail-biters can only benefit the Yankees come October, when their bullpen will be deeper and more of their run producers are back.

We’re into August and the summer Boone Swoon is subsiding. The drama of who should stay or go is over. It’s time to dance.
